New at Evolve: ADHD Coaching for Kids, Teens & Adults

Do you feel like you’re constantly playing catch-up, losing track of tasks, missing deadlines, or forgetting things that matter, no matter how hard you try? Or maybe as a parent, you’re noticing these same struggles in your child or teen, and watching it wear on their confidence at school and at home. We’re introducing ADHD coaching at Evolve Psychological Services: in person in Montclair, NJ, or online throughout NJ and nationally in any state. We work together to build self-understanding, strengths-based strategies and real momentum in everyday life.

You may feel like you’re working twice as hard just to keep up and carrying frustration, self-doubt, or the sense that you should be able to figure this out on your own by now. Sometimes the people around you don’t fully understand what it takes, and may even suggest you just need to try harder. But it’s not that simple, and you’re doing your best with the brain you have. That’s exactly why it may be the right time to give yourself, or your child, the support that actually fits.

What ADHD Coaching Is

ADHD coaching is a client-driven, collaborative process in which the client determines the focus of each session based on their current needs, goals, and priorities. Delivered through one-on-one sessions with an ADHD coach, this approach helps clients build a deeper understanding of their unique experience with ADHD and how it influences daily functioning without pathologizing or trying to “fix” who they are.

The goal isn’t to eliminate ADHD-related challenges, but to help clients better understand themselves, leverage their strengths, develop effective strategies, and create the systems and supports that allow them to function more effectively.

Who ADHD Coaching Is For

We offer ADHD coaching across the lifespan from children as young as 6, through teens and adults. It’s especially helpful for people with a diagnosis of ADHD, as well as those who suspect they have it or simply want support with focus, follow-through, and daily functioning. For younger children, a parent is typically involved throughout to help reinforce strategies at home; teens generally take the lead themselves, with parents kept in the loop.

Common ADHD-Related Challenges We Help With

  • Difficulty sustaining focus or attention, especially on tasks that feel tedious or unstimulating
  • Trouble managing time, estimating how long things take, or meeting deadlines
  • Losing or misplacing important items like keys, homework, school supplies, work materials
  • Impulsivity that affects decisions, conversations, or relationships
  • Difficulty starting tasks, even ones that matter (task initiation)
  • Emotional reactivity, low frustration tolerance, or feeling easily overwhelmed
  • Forgetting assignments, appointments, or commitments
  • For children and teens specifically: trouble following multi-step directions, frequent reminders needed at school, or friction around homework routines

How ADHD Coaching Works

Our individualized approach ensures clients receive coaching adjusted to their specific needs and goals:

  • Intake and initial conversation to understand current goals, priorities, and areas of difficulty.
  • Personalized plan development with clear goals and realistic expectations, driven by what the client wants to focus on.
  • Weekly sessions (45–60 minutes), with the option for additional sessions or text-based support as needed.
  • Collaboration with parents, teachers, or other supports to reinforce strategies outside of sessions, when applicable.
  • Ongoing check-ins to reflect on progress and adjust the focus as goals and priorities shift, coaching has no fixed timeline.

What the Research Says About ADHD Coaching

Research on ADHD coaching has grown steadily over the past two decades. An early outcome study on ADHD coaching for adults found a positive impact across a broad set of daily-functioning concerns, with results holding up over time. A more recent review of ADHD coaching studies found that the majority reported statistically significant benefits, with several others showing positive trends, specifically improvements in self-regulation, the development of more productive beliefs, and the coaching relationship itself. Findings across age groups point to improvements in areas like social behavior in elementary-age students and academic performance in high school and college students.

A 2026 prospective study of adults receiving structured ADHD coaching found statistically significant improvements, with medium to large effect sizes, in ADHD symptoms and executive functioning by the end of the coaching engagement.

The Client-Coach Relationship

It’s impossible to overlook the importance of the relationship between a client and their coach. We prioritize building a strong, collaborative relationship grounded in curiosity rather than judgment, a safe, encouraging environment where clients can identify their specific challenges, explore strategies, and set goals that actually reflect what matters to them. That partnership creates a foundation of trust and accountability, which drives meaningful progress.

ADHD Coaching vs. Therapy vs. Executive Function Coaching

ADHD coaching takes a broader, client-driven view of how ADHD affects someone’s whole life, self-understanding, strengths, relationships, and self-advocacy. Executive function coaching focuses more specifically on skills like organization, planning, and time management, and can be a helpful complement. Therapy, meanwhile, addresses the emotional and psychological side of ADHD, anxiety, self-esteem, family stress, through a clinical, diagnosis-informed approach. The three are complementary, and many clients benefit from more than one at different points.
