What Are Executive Function Skills? Why So Many Kids and Adults Struggle With Focus, Organization, and Follow-Through

by Nicole Garcia, PhD

Many people feel frustrated because they know they are capable, yet everyday responsibilities still feel overwhelming.

You might notice things like:

  • forgetting assignments or deadlines
  • procrastinating even when something is important
  • feeling disorganized despite trying hard to stay on top of things
  • starting tasks but struggling to finish them

These challenges are often related to executive functioning skills. Executive functioning refers to the mental processes that help us plan, organize, manage time, regulate emotions, and follow through on tasks. These skills act as the brain’s management system, allowing us to coordinate thoughts and actions to accomplish goals.

When executive functioning skills are strong, people can prioritize tasks, stay organized, and adapt when plans change. When these skills are underdeveloped or overwhelmed, daily life can feel chaotic.

What Are Executive Function Skills?

Executive functions are a group of cognitive skills that help people manage complex tasks and responsibilities. These skills include:

  • planning and prioritization
  • organization
  • time management
  • working memory
  • task initiation
  • emotional regulation
  • sustained attention

Together, these abilities allow us to break down large projects, remember important information, and stay focused long enough to complete what we start. These skills develop gradually throughout childhood and adolescence and continue strengthening into early adulthood.

Why Do Executive Function Challenges Happen?

Executive functioning difficulties can occur for many reasons. For some individuals, these challenges are connected to ADHD or learning differences, which affect the brain systems responsible for planning and self-regulation. For others, executive functioning struggles appear during major transitions, such as:

  • starting middle school
  • entering high school or college
  • managing increasing work responsibilities
  • balancing career, family, and personal obligations

Even highly capable individuals may struggle when the demands placed on their executive functioning exceed the systems they currently have in place.

The Good News: Executive Function Skills Can Improve

One of the most important things to understand is that executive functioning skills are not fixed traits. They are skills that can be strengthened over time through:

  • practice
  • structure
  • strategic support
  • skill-building approaches such as executive function coaching

With the right systems and strategies, people can learn how to manage responsibilities more effectively and feel less overwhelmed. Improving executive functioning can lead to better academic performance, increased productivity at work, and greater confidence in everyday life.

At Evolve, we offer executive function coaching to help children, teens, and adults develop systems for planning, organization, and follow-through so daily responsibilities feel more manageable.
